Our Story
Steven's Legacy
In 1987, Steven Young was diagnosed with a rare cancer at age 12. Over the following two years, his doctors recommended an experimental drug not yet approved by Health Canada, creating significant financial pressure for his parents, Ron and Kathy Young. After the Caledonia community learned about the family’s situation, residents donated generously and local groups held fundraisers during a weekend in September 1989. As Steven’s condition worsened, he asked that any remaining funds be used to help others facing similar medical costs not covered by OHIP. He died that same weekend. The Steven Young Trust was created in his memory.

Each Canada Day, the Steven Young Trust brings the community together for its annual Rubber Duck Race along the Grand River in Caledonia. Supporters purchase rubber ducks, cheer them on as they race down the river, and help raise funds for individuals and families facing medical illness.
Steven’s story, along with the ongoing work of the Steven Young Trust through donations and Duck Race ticket sales, reflects the lasting power of compassion, community support, and generosity in difficult times.
The Canada Day Duck Race is the Trust’s only fundraiser and also helps raise community awareness of those who may need support.
